Establishment of the AAS Asia Regional Office in Beijing, China: Advancing Scientific Collaboration Between Africa and China

At its meeting of 27 June 2022, the Governing Council of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) resolved to set up Regional Offices of the Academy in Asia, Europe, and North America to increase scientific collaboration between the AAS and institutions in those regions. This idea was warmly welcome by the Chinese Fellows of the AAS, and they requested that the Asia Regional Office be sited in Beijing.

The AAS President visited China between 23 December 2022 and 14 January 2023, and held meetings with the AAS Fellows in China, the President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Directors of Biotechnology Institutions, as well as the Beijing Global Talent Exchange Association.

In addition to signing MOUs with various institutions, a Concept Note was also signed between the AAS and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences with the aim of establishing the China/Africa Agricultural Science, Technology and Innovation Alliance to boost food security in Africa and achieve Zero Hunger, as obtained in China.
